Choosing a glucose meter

Choose a glucose meter? A few tips

Many diabetics measure their blood glucose themselves. Insulin is administered based on this. A correct outcome of the measurement is therefore of vital importance. In most cases, blood glucose is measured from home with a glucose meter. In the beginning, the GP is often the point of contact, but soon we switch to home measurements. How do you choose the right one? glucose meter?

The choice often depends on the type of meter that the doctor or practitioner uses. Many diabetics also use this type of meter at home. But know that you can always decide which meter you use. Pharmacies or insurers do not deal with this, but of course they can advise. But you always choose yourself.

Quality marks for glucose meters

Choosing the right meter can be made easier by paying attention to quality marks and quality standards. Consider an ISO certification. From 2018, there are national quality requirements and glucose meters must meet this ISO standard. But there are also quality marks such as TÜV Rheinland (formerly the TNO quality mark). TÜV Rheinland assesses new glucose meters for accuracy and, for example, ergonomics. But the organization also re-inspects existing meters. If your glucose meter has ISO standard and TÜV Rheinland, you are in the right place. Check for yourself whether your meter complies.

Ease of use glucose meter

It is also important that the meter is easy to use. Consider the size and brightness of the display, battery life, ease of use, size of buttons and, for example, the speed at which the results are available. Many meters provide results within 5 seconds and have a large display. Batteries are often one-time use, not rechargeable and must be replaced after hundreds (sometimes even thousands) of measurements. One meter is slightly larger than the other. This can be pleasant for people with reduced motor skills.

Test strips

Each meter has its own type of test strip. When choosing a meter, you are also indirectly choosing a test strip. Test strips expire. Make sure that the brand you choose has long expiration dates. But they all have a shelf life of around 12 months. Test strips can also have a certain size, which is useful for people with reduced motor skills.

Pricing

Of course, price also plays a major role. Glucose meters are sold separately but also in starter packages. With a starter package you immediately have everything you need. This also includes lancing devices, test strips and lancets. These starter packages are often well priced. Manufacturers hope to convince you to continue using their product. When purchasing a starter package, always check the prices of the individual test strips and lancets. Because you continue to need it. Prices are approximately between 15 and 50 euros for a glucose meter. The more expensive variants often have more options. Think of storage measurements, export functions and, for example, calculating average values.

What is the quality (accuracy) of such a blood sugar meter if it does not work based on blood samples, but on the basis of a sensor that you stick on the back of the upper arm? Is this also a good method?

Hi Pim, the method is fully accepted. Many type 1 diabetes patients switch to continuous measurement. The advice is always to discuss everything with your doctor or nurse before you start using sensor technology. It is a good method, but one with instructions for use.
